Immerse yourself into the world of the Empire and Biedermeier era, which here stands in a fascinating contrast with the ceramic sculptures of Erwin Wurm. The sculptural body segments invade the Geymüllerschlössel’s interior, creating tableaux vivants—dramaturgical arrangements located between movement and stasis, history and the present—in individual rooms. In the garden of the Schlössel, Erwin Wurm’s sculptures of Carrara marble connect up to the artist’s role in critically illuminating and distorting our world.

Michael Anastassiades is primarily known as a designer of lighting fixtures, though he also works in many other sectors (glassware for J. & L. Lobmeyr and furniture for Gebrüder Thonet Vienna). In addition, he is active in exhibition and interior design. For the SHOWROOM WIENER WERKSTÄTTE he has also developed a special display in which he uses his own products and stylistic elements to create an astonishingly alienating setting for the WW exhibits.

The fascinatingly complex cultural epoch denoted by the term “Vienna 1900” has long been the stuff of legend. And the equally multifaceted and momentous output of this period’s artisans and designers is now the focus of a section of the MAK Permanent Collection. At this presentation’s thematic core is the multifarious struggle to arrive at an Austrian, modern, bourgeois, and democratic style. Today, this chapter of design and arts and crafts history—subsumed under the terms of Secessionism and Jugendstil—serves like no other to underpin Austrian identity. But around 1900, the search for a suitable style reflected an identity crisis of the bourgeois class. The entirely contradictory results of this search were tied together by a central characteristic of the modern era: a pioneering desire for expressive individuality.

Scarcely any other artist has been the subject of so much literature as has Gustav Klimt. Yet to date the formative influence of his years at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts has received far too little attention. The MAK is now turning its attention to this topic, whereby Ferdinand Laufberger, a professor of Klimt’s whom the latter revered his entire life, is being accorded a place of honor. Besides Laufberger, the Ringstraße artists Ludwig Minnigerode, Friedrich Sturm, and Michael Rieser also left their mark as Klimt’s teachers on his work. Doubtless induced by Rudolf Eitelberger, modern artists such as Anselm Feuerbach likewise exercised an enduring influence on Klimt’s artistic development. The exhibition is thus dedicated to the influence of these years in the School of Arts and Crafts on Klimt’s oeuvre as a whole. Works from the MAK’s rich inventory, on show for the first time, are complemented by loans from international collections, illustrating the relationship between Klimt’s vocational training and his later artistic development.

The official Austrian contribution for the London Design Biennale 2021 was commissioned by the MAK and designed by Process – Studio for Art and Design. Now, the installation is on view in Vienna for the first time: Titled “Tokens for Climate Care”, the project focuses on the current and essential human task of climate care, nudged by the transformative power of design.

The project uses AI-based technology to create new and original graphic symbols based on a comprehensive database of logos, symbols and glyphs. Preliminary "labelling" of the data by the team with key terms that cover a broad definition of climate care, including its social, political, environmental and economic aspects, enables the AI model to design new symbols based on their meaning.

The new "Tokens for Climate Care" are presented in a spatial laser installation making the generated output data visible in real time. Visitors can take part in determining the meaning of the created symbols via their smartphones by selecting three terms from a list of labels that allow for endless combinations. The color of the laser installation will change accordingly.

The generated symbols are accessible worldwide via tokensforclimate.care and can be used freely by and for climate caring initiatives and activism.

With this presentation of the competition 100 BEST POSTERS 20: Germany Austria Switzerland, for the 16th year in succession the MAK is devoting an exhibition to pioneering works and trends from the fields of artistic and poster design. The exhibition dispels any doubts one may have concerning the relevance of printed posters in this age of constant medial overstimulation.
