The primary objective of the exhibition is to highlight the great importance for the development of modern furniture design of the characteristic bentwood furniture of the world-famous company. The MAK possesses an extraordinary furniture collection and one of the world’s largest stocks of bentwood furniture, which at the same time provides the foundation for the exhibits shown in the exhibition. On the basis of this stock of furniture, the goal is now to formulate strategies for the expansion of the Thonet collection in the MAK.The artist Rolf Sachs and the designer team of Friedrich von Borries and Frieder Bohaumilitzky are supporting the expansion of the MAK furniture collection: they have created two “Thonet unique pieces” especially for the MAK, which will be presented to the public for the first time on the Thonet Day and will then be auctioned at the design auction in the Dorotheum at the beginning of April. The revenues earned through the auction should enable the MAK to acquire two parquet pattern tables of the Thonet brothers, which, according to curator Sebastian Hackenschmidt, are unique specimens of bentwood production from the 1850s in Vienna.PROGRAM10:30 a.m.Tour of BENTWOOD AND BEYOND.
