MAK – Museum of Applied Arts

Gelatin tests the art business and develops interventions that break with conventions and the order of things. The artist group puts the possibilities of the museum as a platform to the test and is interested in an exchange between artists, art, and the public. The colossal Sofa (2019) can be understood as “a homage to the outsized Franz West,” according to the artists. The sculpture corresponds with the flexibly variable installation 12 Divans (1996) by Franz West and refers to Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis. Gelatin met West for the first time in the 1990s; the artists occasionally worked together for projects and exhibitions and exchanged art.
