Manufacture: Heals, London Cotton T 11727 / 1996, purchased from Francesca Galloway
Between 1945 and the 1970s, many British textile manufactories worked together closely with artists who supplied designs to them. Unlike, for example, the products of the Wiener Werkstätte, this art for the people actually caught on with broad segments of the population. These mostly printed fabrics which were affordable for everyone were considered as being exceptionally democratic; the production was soon imitated. The fabric from the MAK holdings shows a chain of elephants standing on top of one another and was presumably used for interior-decoration textiles.
