MAK-it! XL-Viennese Mesh

with artist Ann Muller

Traditional handicraft, which is mostly considered an expertise of women, is often the starting point for Ann Muller’s textile sculptures. In her projects, she highlights cultural (fashion) trends, art-historical references, or socio-political topics such as the feminist agenda as well as the respective history of the textiles she selects. Her installation Die fleißigen Totengräberinnen und ihr Werkzeug [The Hardworking Female Gravediggers and Their Tools] in the HARD/SOFT exhibition mostly refers to the works of art by women of the Wiener Werkstätte. Especially textiles were one of the most important media of the generation of women artists of Viennese Modernism trained at the School of Arts and Crafts. The surreal scene with intertwined hands made of heavy, precious velvet for furniture and the corduroy of the working class is carried by a Viennese mesh made of webbing straps.

MAK – Museum of Applied Arts
In this edition of MAK-it!, textiles will be torn to strips or all kinds of straps and belts will be interwoven to textile meshes in empty stretcher frames, which are created as quasi-satellites of the XL-mesh and can be taken home. For the textile strips, you are welcome to bring old clothes, textiles such as bed linen or tablecloths made of cotton, as well as your own textiles by the meter as a base. Various straps and belts will be provided. Ann Muller studied fashion and sculpture. She is a performer and part of the Viennese artist collective Bar du Bois.
