Essay

FROM THE WIENER WERKSTÄTTE TO CLIMATE MODERNITY

THE MAK AS A MUSEUM OF ACTIVE HOPE
Also the start of the year 2021 is dominated by Covid-19 and we continue to need a lot of patience and understanding to endure this state of emergency. Just like you, we too can hardly wait to return to normality, which also means: wide open museums with great exhibitions, inspiring tours, and lively events.

But Covid-19 is also a turning point. We all know that the future normality of economy and society will have to be fundamentally different from before Covid-19. The MAK is one of the top art museums worldwide that have been addressing the great ecological and social challenges of our time for years. In this context, the year 2021 marks a new peak with regard to the efforts made to reduce the museum’s ecological footprint as well as with the thematic focus on the Wiener Werkstätte and Climate Care.

Against this background, the MAK is circulating a new essay titled FROM THE WIENER WERKSTÄTTE TO CLIMATE MODERNITY: THE MAK AS A MUSEUM OF ACTIVE HOPE after the fundamental essay CLIMATE BEAUTY: The Art of Reimagining Progress published in June 2020.

We are looking forward to your numerous responses as well as to your visit when the MAK reopens.
