Karl RUHMANN

Paper industrialist Karl Ruhmann, who compiled one of the largest tin collections in Europe, fled Austria after the “Anschluss” just like his two brothers. In October 1938, the MAK took over seven tin objects from Karl Ruhmann which were restituted to the owner in 1951. After the end of the war, the MAK purchased a porcelain relief and a glass bottle from Karl’s divorced wife Ruda Ruhmann in 1945, two glasses from Karl Ruhmann in 1946, and a porcelain vase from Karl’s second wife Käthe Ruhmann in 1950. In 1963, a barter deal took place in which the MAK handed over several tin objects to Karl Ruhmann and received eleven glasses in return which were from the Franz Ruhmann collection and had already been at the MAK from the NS era until their restitution in 1951.
