Through her conceptual methodology, Castoro interpreted sculpture within her actional radius, writing her own personal narrative in the context of Minimal Art, Post-Minimal Art, Concept Art, and Feminism. Her works imitate the proportions of the human body and are “kinesthetic”—linked to the sensation of movement. They are designed to be set in motion. The artist was active in the circle of Carl Andre (to whom she was married between 1964 and 1970), Sol LeWitt, and Agnes Martin. She was inspired by modern dance and collaborated with choreographer Yvonne Rainer.
Castoro experimented with surreal connotations and fluid gender roles, responding as an artist to the social and political upheavals and discourse of the 1960s and 1970s.
