The CityFactory is a real-time research laboratory for new fields of work in the creative industries, that focuses on discovering and visualizing future urban opportunities in Vienna. The format is a cooperation between the MAK, the Vienna Business Agency with its creative center departure, and the IDRV—Institute of Design Research Vienna. The CityFactory has been developing strategies and tools for positive change since 2016; in 2018 these were articulated as questions and directives for sustainable transformation in the form of a participative notebook.

The theoretical foundations for the project were laid in a workshop conducted by resilience researcher Harald Katzmair: with the aid of algorithmic questionnaires and a highly motivated group of invited participants from the fields of design, the creative economy, fashion, culture, and research, the workshop identified those points of leverage at which pressure should be applied to initiate real sustainable change. In doing so, the project brought together and evaluated both the reciprocal impact of the many challenges posed by a city such as Vienna (to include combining openness with public safety, social and economic justice, and work and digitalization) and the new roles played by design (embracing inclusive and participative strategies, a holistic approach to production and consumption, and sociopolitical activism).

The notebook is the result of the project and at the same time the tool for its continuation. As a participative book, it aims to foster involvement in transformation and change in Vienna, encourage people to think outside of pre-existing structures, and experiment with alternative strategies.

The results of the project will flow into the newly conceived MAK DESIGN LAB within the framework of the VIENNA BIENNALE FOR CHANGE 2019.
