In the Bantu language of Northern Zaire "Kilengi" means "joy arising from beauty". This exhibition at the MAK presents in a contemporary context a selection of about 230 African sculptures and masks assembled by the collector Walter Bareiss during the past 20 years. The objects shown - from marionette figures used in dance competitions to musical instruments and leadership staffs - offer an extraordinary insight into African art between religion and prestige, healing and ritual. After its presentation at the MAK the Kilengi exhibition, which was put together by the Kestner Society in Hanover, Germany, toured a number of venues in Europe and the US.
